Bill Hero is a paid subscription service, and comes with a money-back savings guarantee which means you can cancel and receive a full refund if we can't find more savings on your first switch than the savings guarantee.

The dollar amount of the Savings Guarantee can vary by subscription type or by Bill Hero partner channel. It's always displayed prominently at the point of purchase:

 

If you're already on a competitive plan, or if the market has moved to more expensive rates since your last switch, then it's possible we might not be able to beat the Savings Guarantee. If that happens for you, then we'll notify you and offer you the option to cancel immediately.

We use the detailed data from your bill to calculate what you would have paid for that same usage with the same tariff type over an equivalent time period under all the relevant publicly available plans on the market. We include tariff type, solar feed-in, guaranteed & conditional discounts, and incentives.

Savings are expressed as an annualised amount by applying the savings found for the billing period pro-rata over a full year. For example, if Bill Hero finds $10 savings in a single monthly bill, this would be expressed as $120 annualised savings. We actually calculate on the number of days in the bill cycle rather than months, but you get the idea.

 

For gas savings, the annualisation calculation takes into account seasonal variation in gas consumption, based on indexed average seasonal gas consumption by climate zone.

We take all the details from your bill including tariff type, kWh consumption, start and end date, solar exports, solar feed-in tariff, plus any discounts, concessions and incentives that might also be present.

Then we calculate what you would have been charged for that same usage and time under every relevant publicly available plan, and we rank them all by price, including your own bill.

It's very illuminating to see where your bill lands in the lineup.

In the bad old days, energy plans often had fixed duration, and there would often be fees for early contract exit. Today there is regulation in pace that limits retailers ability to charge exit fees, so much so that none of them even try to charge exit fees any more.

Retailers do list 'disconnection' and 'reconnection' fees. These fees apply only to physical disconnection or reconnection of power from the property, which might be required if you're moving or for construction work. When you're switching retailers at the same address, your power is not disconnected at all, and there is no disconnect or reconnect fee whatsoever.

So you can use Bill Hero with confidence that your savings will not be eroded through exit fees.

We'll then send you a link to our 'no bill' process which steps you through the following questions:
  • Location of your new home
  • Number of people living in the new home
  • Does it have mains gas connected
  • Does it have electric hot water or electric primary heating
  • Does it have solar, and if so what kW rating
  • Does it have a pool
This is enough for us to establish your new home's 'energy profile' and lets us estimate your kWh consumption based on average and benchmark industry data.
We'll run a comparison for you based on this estimated consumption 
The plan and retailer we recommend will be competitively priced, but because the recommendation will be based on estimated rather than actual consumption, it may not be the absolute best possible price for you.
When your first bill comes through, we'll re-run the analysis based on actual data in your bill, and may recommend another switch at that time if we find annualised savings for you greater than your Bothered Threshold.

Bill Hero sends an email with a summary of the results found for each bill processed, which includes Bill price, and Comparison price.

Bill price is the final price displayed on your bill, showing the amount you need to pay, or the amount that your account is in credit for that bill cycle.

Comparison price is a value calculated by Bill Hero that represents the charges associated with the current bill period. we use Comparison price to compare your bill against all the other plans available to you in the market

Generally, Bill price and Comparison price will be the same, but not always. Here's why these can sometimes display different values.

Balance brought forward

If there was a credit or debit balance on your account at the start of the billing period, then the final bill price will include that credit or debit.

Bill Hero compares on the charges and credits accrued during the billing period, independently of whatever was the debit or credit balance for your account at start of the billing period, so we do not include the balance brought forward in the comparison price

Concessions

Concession schemes vary by state, are are nearly always dynamically calculated on the base bill price rather than a fixed concession amount.

This means that Bill Hero cannot assume the the dollar value of a concession present in your bill will also apply for the alternative plans we calculate pricing for.

Bill Hero handles this by adding-back any concession present in your bill to find the base price, then we compare on that base price. This allows us to find the best priced plan for you excluding concession.

Your eligibility for your concession will not change no matter which retailer and plan you switch to, but the dollar value for your concession credit under that new plan will be different.

The best priced plan excluding concession will still be the best priced plan after concession has been recalculated under the new plans and reapplied.

Bill Hero treats the Queensland Electricity asset ownership dividend as a concession.

Once-off fees

You bill can include a variety of one-time fees and charges including credit card processing fees, meter reconfiguration fees, late payment fees, etc.

These kinds of fees do not relate to your consumption or bill period duration, and they vary between retailers.

We do not include these kinds of fees in the comparison price

After your first switch, Bill Hero monitors every bill for and calculates what additional savings are available for you on each one. You set your own 'Bothered Threshold' for the savings you'd need before bothering to switch again. Bill Hero will report back to you on every bill, but we'll only initiate a new switch when we find savings greater than your Bothered Threshold.

 

Yes! If solar is visible in your bill, the Bill Hero will include it in your comparison and results.

Its not unusual for solar households to be focused more on the feed-in tariff part of their plan, and less focussed on the other consumption and connection charges that will also apply.

Bill Hero does not look for the best possible feed-in tariff per se, we find the plan that would have delivered the best overall price for you, including feed-in tariff, consumption and connection charges, along with any other elements like discounts and incentives.

 

Stepped rate and capped system size feed-in tariffs

Its becoming more common that retailers offer feed-in tariffs where the feed-in rate changes after a kWh exported threshold is exceeded. Some retailers also limit the available of certain plans and feed-in tariffs so they're available only for households with solar systems below a certain kW rating.

Bill Hero handles the stepped rate automatically, and will price the value of the kWh exports accordingly.

For the capped system sizes, Bill Hero needs to know the size of your system For new Bill Hero subscribers we now as this question as part of the sign up process. You can inform us of your solar via Bill Hero support at Hello@BillHero.com.au, so that your comparison results will automatically be filtered to exclude any plans you're not eligible for due to solar system size.

 

Premium feed-in tariff schemes

There are a variety of legacy state-based schemes set up a decade or more ago that offered premium feed-in tariffs for early adopters. Unfortunately none of these legacy schemes are available for new solar installations.

In general, your eligibility for these schemes does not change when you switch between retailers, and the published solar feed-in tariff that the retailer offers usually is applied in addition to any premium FiT you're also entitled to.

You'll need to pay your bill directly to your new retailer. Bill Hero does not handle payment collection.

 

Discounts often feature prominently in the marketing of energy plans, but it’s hard to understand what the impact will be, since the discount can apply to either your kWh consumption, or to the final dollar amount of the bill.

Retailers often make their discounts contingent on on-time bill payment and/or direct debit, so your behaviour as a bill payer is a major influence on the effective price you will pay.

Bill Hero automatically includes all guaranteed discounts. We also accommodate conditional discounts by calculating your personalised comparison results based on the payment information in your bill.

If your bill does not specify if you paid your previous bill on time, then we'll assume you'll pay by direct debit, since this usually ensures the best possible prices. You can change the payment behaviour in our personalised rankings screen to see how prices can change due to payment behaviour.

When you say you pay by Direct Debit we apply the full potential discount benefit for each plan, including any incremental discounting that may be specifically tied to direct debit payment.

When you say you always pay on time, we apply the full potential discount benefit for each energy offer, exclusive of any incremental Direct Debit discount.

When you say you sometimes pay on time, we apply half the potential discount benefit for each plan, exclusive of any Direct Debit discount.

When you say you do not pay on time, we do not apply any conditional discount benefits for any plan.

 

Bill Hero is a Savings Service, not a comparison site.

Comparison sites make money by taking commissions from retailers, which means they're working for them, not for you. They don't really 'compare the market', and you or I can never really 'select' the best deal, because their incentive is to sell you into any plan that will generate a commission, not to find the plan that is best for you.

Also, comparison sites are one-time only, so you need to keep going back to review your plan. Retailers know that many people find this too hard, so they ratchet up their prices over time.
